Research Center “E. Piaggio”, University of Pisa

The University of Pisa is one of the biggest and most well-established universities in Italy. The Research Center “E. Piaggio” is located in the School of Engineering and is one of the oldest interdisciplinary research and technology transfer centres in Europe, devoted to the training of personnel for careers in Research and Development. Its main focus is Robotics and Bioengineering, with 4 pivotal themes– MIND, MATTER, MOTION and MANIPULATION all dedicated to improving the quality of life and the performance of machines using biological systems for inspiration.


Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam

Erasmus MC is one of seven university hospitals in the Netherlands. We are committed to achieving a healthy population and pursuing excellence in healthcare through research and teaching. 

The Connective Tissue Repair lab is involved in this project to provide biological expertise of osteochondral defect repair. 



University Medical Center Utrecht

UMCU is one of the leading academic hospitals in Europe, dedicated to high-quality patient care, innovative research and advanced education. The Department of Orthopaedics at UMCU is at the forefront of research in osteoarthritis and (osteo)chondral defects. An innovative single-stage cell therapy for cartilage defects (IMPACT) was invented at the UMCU and is currently in phase III clinical trials. Furthermore, the UMCU has a strong track record modelling the transport of neutral and charged solutes across articular cartilage using  experimental and finite element models (FEM).

Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research

The Fraunhofer Translational Center Regenerative Therapies TLC-RT develops tissue models as an alternative to animal testing.  This involves establishing scalable manufacture processes and engineering technical prototypes and developing biological implants. Therefore, besides accelerating cost efficient drug development, TLC-RT promotes the 3R principles. The main goal is the fast application and implementation of current material research and tissue engineering for pre-clinical and clinical usage. 





KU Leuven

Within LUMINATE, KU Leuven will be coordinating the screening of newly developed bioinks with respect to their material characteristics, processability, and cytotoxicity.

The University of Barcelona participates in the LUMINATE project through Creatio, contributing its expertise in GMP translation, quality control setup, GxP shipment validation, develop GMP compliant protocols and regulatory consultancy for the EndoFLight technology.
